Inaugural Post
Law school finals are over, thank goodness. Now my time is spent recouping from this crazy semester and planning for my upcoming trip to Rwanda.
Yes, it's true. I will be in Rwanda in 3 weeks. I will be working with 4 other individuals on behalf of the International Leadership Institute. The work we will do will focus on assisting women who were raped and forcibly infected with HIV during the 1994 genocide. The project’s goals are threefold: advocacy, education, and economic sustainable development. Almost twelve years have passed since these horrific events occurred and still these women are not receiving the treatment and attention they so direly need. This is mainly due to the fact that Rwandan societal norms do not allow for a means of addressing the issues of rape and HIV/AIDS. We intend to assist these women by interviewing them, understanding their situations, and then working with them to create sustainable solutions to their everyday needs.
I feel several things regarding this trip, including apprehension, anxiety, and excitement. I've never been to Africa, nonetheless a developing country. While Rwanda is basically a safe country, we're making sure that we take as many precautions as possible. We will be staying in a guarded guest house and we will be surrounded by others on the ground at all times.
There are so many thoughts running through my head right now, and so many things to accomplish before I leave... I wanted to ensure that I started this blog before things got hectic. Funny thing is, I'm not even sure I'll be able to post anything while I'm in Rwanda. I'll do the best I can to keep you all updated. Much love to all!
